Mixtapes for Hookers

Last Year’s Hookies

[Note: I had originally written this for an actual publication, but my editor got a promotion and his replacement wasn’t so interested in hearing about gay escorting. I tried a couple of other outlets but I’m terrible at story pitching and alas, here it is 364 days later on this graveyard of a blog.]

It’s Friday night and there’s one solitary cop stationed outside the Roseland Ballroom on 59th Street in midtown Manhattan. It’s not an especially unusual sight; the Roseland is the largest ballroom in all of Manhattan, after all, and it’s standard to have law enforcement on hand in case the crowds get rowdy or somebody does something dangerous.

What’s odd, though, is the event he’s patrolling: the sixth annual Hookies, an awards ceremony honoring men who make some (if not all) of their livings by having sex with other men. Which is not actually legal in the state of New York, or anywhere else in the US, for that matter, excepting a few rogue counties of Nevada.

The Hookies are thrown each March by Rentboy.com, a listings website for gay male escorts that’s been around since 1997. Currently they have about 4200 ads posted in 79 countries (mostly the US and China), though those numbers don’t exactly reflect their actual number of advertisers. Escorts can list themselves in multiple cities, and many do; one adventurous Parisian named Kevin, for instance, currently has ads placed in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Tunisia and Botswana. (He’s not the one escort that claims to serve North Korea, although if you’re curious there’s one of those, too.)

Sunday News

Look at me, all up and eating a healthy breakfast and starting my day before 9am on a Sunday.  Here’s some news and stuff:

New York approved gay marriage!  Although hopefully you knew that already.  I had an interesting discussion last week with a gay marriage advocate here in Rhode Island, one who has no desire to actually get married herself.  This really isn’t at all about marriage as a heteronormative institution or anything like that; it’s about the state not telling certain people that they can do certain things that other people are forbidden to do.  Rich Juzwiak, who was out in New York that night, had maybe the most thoughtful take on the New York issue I’ve seen this week.

But while all of that was happening, the NY Eagle was being randomly raided by the fire department?

Google pulled an ad from some Dublin-based sex workers concerned about their rights being possibly affected by a proposed change in prostitution law.  (Ireland, I hadn’t realized, is currently like Canada, where the sale of sex itself is legal but most other things affiliated with prostitution are not.)

The 2012 Rentboy calendar is now available for pre-order on Amazon, which is always sort of funny to me.  Sad that I wasn’t asked to participate!  (Not really.)

Here’s rentbear Rusty McMann before the Hookies last Friday, where he was nominated for Best Mature Escort.  Watch McMann (not McCann, which I had written previously because I am illiterate) get interviewed by the gay hooker equivalent of Joan Rivers.  She is, honestly, way more amazing than he is.

Dirty Cash, They Want You, Dirty Cash, They Need You, Oh.

The International Escort Awards, aka the Hookies, are taking place this Friday in New York.  I meant to think about going, because I love excuses to go to New York for parties, but I don’t actually see that happening this week since it’s the 15th and I haven’t even paid my rent yet (fun fun fun.)

Anyway, I just thought I’d mention that this teaser thing is up.  You can go to rentboy.com to vote until Thursday; I’m still not sure how any of this makes sense–you can’t legitimately vote on something until you’ve experienced all the candidates, right?–but Rusty McCann, who wrote that Salon article I mentioned yesterday, is up for Best Mature Escort and Will from $pread Magazine is up for Best Escort Blogger.  Also Rob, who’s nominated in the Best Top category, is kind of the hottest thing I’ve ever seen, judging from the small jpegs that the site allows.

On Dirty Calendars

I got an e-mail the other day that the Rentboy 2009 Calendar is out now (and available through Amazon.)  I actually thought about buying it for a second, as though that’s something I need to be spending money on.

Now that I don’t have a desk job, I don’t have a desk calendar, which means I never write anything down.  And when I don’t write things down I don’t remember them.  Dreams, parties, concerts, passwords for bank accounts, it doesn’t matter.  I just don’t remember it.  The Facebook event thing is pretty good, but only for people that have Facebook and use it to create event invites.  So a calendar in my house will probably be helpful.

The Rentboy one, with photographs by Dick Mitchell, is okay, although most of the guys are a little too muscly for my liking.  Of course Diesel Washington, the star of my favorite porn scene of this year, would be a welcome addition to my April, and Ago Viara (May) and Gio (some other month) are both pretty hunky, but that’s about all.  Although I do appreciate their subtlety, what with only one flaccid full-frontal shot and two ass pictures, one of which is a sideview.  It’s much more tasteful than the Anabolic calendars I’ve gotten the last couple of years.  Every month is a close-up of a girl with cum on her face and at least one (usually more) dicks surrounding it.  Shaved balls, shaved pubes (if the picture ever shows an inch of the man’s body) and the girl usually looks a little dazed and not in a sexy way; it’s also aggravating because Anabolic takes girls I actually find really cute (like Dana DeArmond) and makes them look really, really unappealing.  But then, I guess I’m also not the target audience for that sort of thing.  Last year I had to take the thing down in March because I was so revolted; luckily, I was able to replace it with an adorable World Wildlife Fun calendar that shows families of polar bears and tree frogs and pandas.

But much more interesting to me, in a way, is the 2009 New York City Sex Bloggers Calendar, featuring twelve ladies known more for their writing skill as for their ability to be photographed looked dazed and spooged-upon.  I’ve already seen the calendar and while I have my gripes about it–by which I mean, everything looks like it was photographed in the same smoky lounge except for one (July, I think?) where the background is totally different and the lady’s wearing a Wonder Woman costume.  Cute, but not conceptually the tightest.  And the box for every day on the calendar is filled with information about sponsors and holidays.  I understand why, but it also defeats the purpose, at least as far as pencilling in appointments goes.

But I still like the pictures.  My favorite sex blogger, at least from the photographs, is Twanna A Hines from funkyblackchick.com.  She’s so frilly!  And the proceeds from the calendar go to Sex Work Awareness, which is obviously a worthy cause.

Sadly, though, there doesn’t seem to be a boy sex blogger equivalent.  Although if anyone ever makes an Out Of Work Rentboy/Easily Distracted Sex Bloggers of Southern New England Calendar then I think I just might be your next Mr October.
