Mixtapes for Hookers

Tomorrow I’m Reading In Providence

My general life philosophy is that I don’t pay covers, especially in Providence, unless there are either 1. performers; 2. strippers; or 3. it’s someone’s birthday party and I have no control over where the party train is going. This event has at least two of the three, though, so I’m not asking you to go to anything I wouldn’t consider going to myself.

So, close readers of this blog will know that for a couple of years now I’ve had a giant mental and physical boner for porn star writer Conner Habib.  So I’m super-excited to announce that this Thursday he’ll be in Providence and we’ll be reading some non-fiction together.

The reading takes place at 7pm at the AS220 Project Space–that’s the one on Mathewson St., next to the Stable.  The reading starts at 7pm and I can genuinely say that you should totally try to be there.  Conner is a very smart and interesting guy, and hopefully when we finally meet face-to-face I’ll be able to, you know, function and not just start slobbering.  Although COME ON would you blame me.  Especially now that I just saw stills from Joe Gage’s upcoming Dad Goes To College.  Holy Lord does that look like my new favorite movie ever.

The dominatrix reads tonight!  As do the escort, the stripper, the rentboy and the porn store clerk.*

Sorry I’ve been such a Negligent Nevil with this blog lately.  But I just wanted to remind you that tonight–tonight!–I’ll be reading in Providence with the fabulous Audacia Ray, the fabulous Melissa Gira Grant, the fabulous Maria Diaz, the fabulous Lola D. Sorrow, and the fabulous Will Vail.  It will all be very fabulous, and we will [tentatively] tell you all the things you need to know about fisting firefighters, Madonna, what to do when someone else’s erection interrupts your workday.  As this is only my second-ever reading in Providence, I am not sure which story I’m going to actually tell, and may sort of let the composition of the audience dictate whether it will be a gross story about bad sex or a very gross story about bad sex.

At long last, I can finally announce this reading I’m organizing in Providence on June 9th. I am very, very excited to have put this together. These are some of my favorite people (ahem ahem ahem ahem), largely because they are all smart and funny and interesting, and so I expect this event to be a big heap of fun.

The reading is part of Q30, which is this month-long queer art happening that a guy named Michael Kurt organized. He’s taken over a space downtown for the month and there’s readings and talks and music and films and a whole bunch of other stuff. It’s good that it’s happening in June because with the colleges out there’s often a shortage of interesting events going on.

Call For Readers

I, Matthew, am organizing a night of sex-driven readings that will be taking place in Providence on Thursday, June 9th as part of a larger, month-long series of gayish/queerish cultural happenings downtown. My event does not have an official title yet, so for the moment I am calling it Can We Please Just Talk About Sex Now, Please? (This will change. Probably.)

Here’s the dilly:

I’ve read at a number of events in New York that focused on personal stories by current and former sex workers. These events are educational, in that ladies and gentlemen at all points on the sexual and gender spectra get together to talk about their personal lives. But more importantly, I have met a number of great readers and writers, those who have published really great books and those who are still trying to untangle their first short story.

Last December my first-ever public reading was at Sex Worker Literati.  It went pretty well, I think.  (It’s also the story that eventually ended up in Coming & Crying.)  Anyway, I got asked to do it again, so if you’re in New York you should come see me on December 19th.

(with friends & allies)
DECEMBER 19, 9pm 308 Bowery, NYC

Zoe Hansen, East Village gal-about-town, will be hosting a Bowery Club holiday blowout.  A Times Square dirty girl, a Feminists Porn Award winner, a very bad escort, a rock romantic and a Rough God will help Zoe Hansen and David Henry Sterry get their ho ho ho on at this Bowery Poetry Club holiday blowout.
