Call For Readers

I, Matthew, am organizing a night of sex-driven readings that will be taking place in Providence on Thursday, June 9th as part of a larger, month-long series of gayish/queerish cultural happenings downtown. My event does not have an official title yet, so for the moment I am calling it Can We Please Just Talk About Sex Now, Please? (This will change. Probably.)

Here’s the dilly:

I’ve read at a number of events in New York that focused on personal stories by current and former sex workers. These events are educational, in that ladies and gentlemen at all points on the sexual and gender spectra get together to talk about their personal lives. But more importantly, I have met a number of great readers and writers, those who have published really great books and those who are still trying to untangle their first short story.

I’d really like to bring some of that energy to Providence, a city that frankly could stand to be sexed up and booked up a little.
That’s where you come in. Are you a writer? A sex worker (past or present) that’s always wanted to write? Someone with really interesting things to say about sex? Or maybe just a queer that’s good with words? I would like to hear from you, then!

If you’re interested, send me an e-mail with your name, a very brief bio, and a sample of something you’re proud of. [Links to writing samples are okay, and so are e-mailed text files (.doc or .rtf, please).] You don’t necessarily have to have books published (although be sure to let me know, if you do) but you should be someone who writes stories and is comfortable telling those stories out loud. I am open to most kinds of prose, fiction and personal narrative alike, but chances are pretty slim that there will be any poetry. (Sorry–personal bias.)

I’ll be looking at entries on a rolling basis between now and the end of April. 11:59 on April 30 is the absolute cutoff, although the earlier you submit the better your chances are.

Preference will be given to not-totally-straight people and to people who have somehow traded their bodies for money at some point. Strippers, porn stars, burlesque performers, escorts, dominatrices and the like are all strongly encouraged to submit.

There’s no funding to pay performers, unfortunately, but Providence is a very nice place to visit in June. If you’re in the New York or Boston areas it’s super-easy to get here via public transport or car. I have a couch and a tiny bed that you’re welcome to use, if need be, or if you’re the fancy hotel-going type I can at least tell you where to go and where to avoid.

Any questions or whatever can be directed to me:  mixtapesforhookers at gmail dot com.

(nb: this is a one-time event; I would love to host readings more than once every thirty years, but I’m already bursting at the seams with the extracurriculars so unfortunately it’s now or 2041, people!)
