Here’s how I initially introduced my favorite songs of 2002 list:

It was an exciting year for news, with George Bush creating more
wars than he knows what to do with, the CIA killing people and
announcing they’ll kill more, Britney and Justin breaking up, a
sniper lurking around Washington, everybody and their cousin’s
baby’s father claiming they were molested by their priest, and
black people winning Oscars. But surely no other event gripped
the hearts of America as passionately as the story of Jamie Sale
and David Pelletier, the Canadian figure skaters who finished
second in the pairs competition at the Winter Olympics but then
ended up getting the gold medal anyway. Yeah. So, in honor of
them, this year’s top 40 songs of the year countdown is a pairs

Yes, it’s true. I made it a pairs competition. So, here’s #40-#11, and then I’ll proceed to reevaluate the top 10, two songs at a time, for probably the next six months or so.
